What to Do on Your Fowey Holiday Cottage Break

For short stays and extended holidays alike Fowey really is a jewel of the Cornish coast.  Rather than wondering what you’ll be doing to pass the time, it’s a case of determining just how much you can squeeze into your trip.

Particularly when staying in the most charming Fowey holiday cottages the town has to offer, which can be difficult to pull yourself away from at the best of times!

Still, there are certain sights and activities that should be given priority during any trip to Fowey. Irrespective of the time of year you head south-west, we’d strongly recommend checking out any (or all) of the following:

Readymoney Cove & Beach

During the warmer months of the year, Readymoney beach is an absolute mecca for sun-seekers. When the weather there isn’t exactly at its best, the dramatic coastline is a sight to behold.

From watersports to canoe rentals to organized kayak excursions and so on, there’s a ton to do in and around Readymoney cove and beach. Don’t leave without sampling the legendary Cornish pasties at the local on-site café!

St Catherine’s Castle

Built at the time of Henry VIII, St Catherine’s Castle is the smallest of Cornwall’s fortifications. Nevertheless, it’s also one of the most impressive.

Both the castle itself and the extraordinary panoramic views make the short trip from Fowey more than worth taking.

As an added bonus, it’s also free to enter throughout most of the year. Just be sure to time your visit to coincide with a clear day.

Take the Ferry to Polruan

You’ll need to take the short ferry ride over to Poluran to enjoy the most wonderful views of Fowey. This little fishing village seems to have somehow escaped the passage of time completely.

The ancient streets are perfect for an afternoon stroll, just as Headland Garden is more than worth checking out. The cozy cafés dotted around Poluran are also charming, to say the least.

Polperro Heritage Coast

The spectacular Polperro Heritage Coast is an official area of outstanding beauty for a good reason. Easily accessible by car, there’s much to explore as you lazily cruise down one of the UK’s most enchanting and inspiring coastlines.

Fowey’s Historic Old Town

Having remained unchanged for centuries, the historical town of Fowey is a wonderful place to waste a few hours. Ancient coffee shops, hidden alcoves, and beautiful boutiques to explore, Fowey’s charms are irresistible all year-round.

If the weather does happen to take a turn for the worse, what better excuse to pop into one or two historic local pubs?

Mevagissey

While checking out the Lost Gardens of Heligan, take the time to explore the picturesque fishing village of Mevagissey. A historic Cornish settlement that remains picture-perfect to this day, there’s no better place to enjoy the best fish and chips Cornwall has to offer.

Slightly further afield, the Lost Gardens of Heligan consistently rank among Cornwall’s most popular and beautiful attractions. A tranquil green oasis that should definitely make it to your must-do list.
